About Open Water Taxidermy

Hi, I’m Cayden Veland, owner of Open Water Taxidermy in Brandon, South Dakota. My passion for hunting and taxidermy began early, inspired by my dad, an avid waterfowl hunter. What started as a self-taught hobby has grown into a career I love, where I create lifelike waterfowl mounts that capture the beauty of each bird. My goal is to help you relive that special moment when you first held your bird, with every mount crafted to my own high standards.

Shipping Your Birds for Mounting

If you’re shipping birds to us for mounting, we’re happy to accept out-of-state specimens. Proper preparation is key: wrap the bird’s head and feet in wet or frozen paper towels, and use insulation to securely pack the bird in a box. For best results, ship via overnight or 2-day shipping, and aim to send your package on a Monday or Tuesday to prevent delays. Please also include the required document and federal bird tag, making sure they stay dry by keeping them separate from the frozen bird. Once your mount is complete, we’ll craft a custom crate and ship it back to you.
